Access to data is restricted
for business users
Interacting with customer data in the Modern Data Stack is complicated. Most tools require knowledge of SQL to perform even basic operations. This leaves business users cut off from data they need everyday.
Something had to be done.

Seam brings full data access to business teams_

The Modern Data Stack promised to democratize data, but failed to include business users. Seam is doing something about it.

Backstory

Seam gives the power of data back to business users_

As companies scale - so does their data stack. New sources and tools make it hard to keep up - especially for business users.

Most tech companies utilize the Modern Data Stack - a suite of tools aimed at making gathering, storing, and analyzing their data more efficient. While these tools are powerful, the barrier to entry is high - especially for business users who don’t know SQL. They have to rely on data analysts or engineer to perform even simple data-related tasks related to their jobs.

The founding team of Seam felt these pains while working at Okta when the company grew from $100M to $1B in revenue. Nick, Mikhel, and José knew there had to be a better way.

Process

From early-stage MVP to scalable product_

We’ve improved Seam’s user experience, gave the product refreshed visual identity, created a marketing website and more.

Project onboarding

The ambitious plan to reimagine Seam’s MVP before a public launch

Seam’s Co-founder and CEO was leading all product efforts up until the point Seam decided to reach out. This wasn’t the best use of Founder’s time and led to frequent bottlenecks. The company was gearing up for a public launch and since Seam targets primarily mature startups (Series B, C and beyond) anything less than excellent was simply not acceptable. That’s where Semiflat comes in. We’ve set ambitious goals for a 10-week sprint to achieve rapid MVP redesign, coming up with a new visual identity and creating a marketing website with custom assets.

Seam’s business goals
Improving the user experience

The existing MVP wasn’t consistent, or designed holistically. Seam’s main priority was to redesign the user experience to identify and eliminate any friction.

Updating the look & feel

Seam wanted the product to appeal to mature startups. The new interface should be clean and highly functional, but still unique and fun.

Create a marketing page

Product website was another priority for Seam. They needed a captivating way to tell their story and capture inbound leads.

Discovery and research

After researching the problem and space we’ve identified Seam’s business needs and goals

In the initial stages of our project with Seam, we focused on thoroughly understanding domain-specific terms from data analytics and the intricate technology behind Seam’s product. Recognizing the complexity of Seam’s AI-powered platform, we ensured that our team was well-versed in all industry-specific terminology and concepts before moving forward with designing wireframes. This foundational knowledge enabled us to work independently and proactively, ultimately saving time and enhancing the impact of our design solutions.

Every project at Semiflat is preceded by a structured discovery session. Understanding Seam’s business needs, target audience, and broader goals enabled us to make bigger impact and deliver tangible value. During the discovery we’ve understood Seam’s user personas - specifically the Business Users, their pains, needs and motivations. Here are the key findings from the workshop:

  • Seam’s target users are not technical

The main group that Seam will target are business users. Interacting with Seam should feel easy and inviting at every step.

  • Seam is getting ready for a public launch

The overarching goal of all product and marketing efforts is a successful public launch approaching in 12 weeks.

  • The team will sell to mid-market companies

Seam will market to fast growing companies with 500 to 1000 employees.

"Semiflat is not just a Figma design file factory. They take the time to understand your product, user, and problem statement, so they can make strategic design decisions.”

UX Audit

We’ve audited Seam’s early MVP and proposed a new experience with improved usability, and consistency

Our audit revealed multiple inconsistencies resulting from rapid iterating and testing updates with customers on a live app without a designer in the process. Over time Seam’s user experience became confusing with redundant functionality on some pages, and significant cognitive load on others. The main problems we’ve identified were:

Key audit findings
Several functionalities were duplicated, making it confusing for users
Naming conventions were not intuitive
The navigation structure could be simplified for faster access to key featuresign
Some pages were lacking proper hierarchy
User Experience Design

Leading an iterative ideation sprint to improve the experience and generate dozens of ideas for new features

We started the design process by drawing alternative mockups to show Seam how these problems can be solved quickly. Since seemingly minor friction points are likely to increase user’s frustration and lead to them abandoning the product altogether we prioritized systematizing user experience patterns, standardizing labels, and removing redundant or unnecessary elements. Next came time to design additional features, or missing user journeys. After the audit and extensive research phase our team was familiar with the terminology and concepts around data, so leading the design effort was fast. We’ve tackled further functionality consecutively, discussing the needs and limitations for each one with Seam’s CEO, before presenting low-fidelity sketches of interfaces aimed at solving the problem at hand. Our goal was to generate as many early ideas as possible and then add further details to the most promising versions. As a result we’ve created hundreds of low-fidelity solutions.

"We consider Semiflat an incredible extension of our small team. They go above and beyond the design work by helping us think strategically about our user's problems."

User Interface Design

The new interface for Seam AI strikes a balance between clean and delightful

When redesigning Seam we’ve prioritized ease of use above all else. The new interface is clean, simple and lacks any heavy styling. The restrained approach we favored is a proven way for Seam to stand the test of time regardless of emerging trends in designing software. In consequence the investment is likely going to last many years without the need to be updated. Since Seam’s main workspace - the chat interface is content-heavy (it outputs text, tables, and SQL queries), being conservative with styling enabled users to view their conversation without distractions.

"The bar for great visual design is high. Users now expect products to be beautiful and easy to use - no matter what stage you are at. Semiflat allowed us to have gorgeous UI from day 1."

New visual identity

Seam’s new visual identity is clean and usable with timeless subtleties and a bold accent color to guide users toward desired actions.

High-fidelity wireframes

We’ve reflected the new visual identity across all user flows from the previous stage of the project. Seam got a Figma file reflecting all steps and states from the user’s journey screen-by screen.

Component library

All reusable components from the interface along with their states and variants were structured and documented in a custom Figma library ready for implementation.

Main chat interface

Seam brings the familiar chat interface to the data world, enabling business users to unlock powerful insights with natural language prompts.

SQL query interface

Seam’s technical users can leverage the full power of their company data by setting up connections, and models using a clean SQL editor.

Table interfaces

Most pages within Seam leverage a table interface. We’ve designed the table component to cover a vast array of use cases - from resizing columns in preview tables to displaying data sources.

Working with our team enabled Seam to save money and go to market faster

Speed and product quality are two factors giving early-stage startups an unfair advantage. We’ve combined them to help Seam AI execute a successful public launch.

When the CEO of Seam approached us he was facing a decision - hire a designer internally, or find a high-quality design studio for a long-term collaboration. Companies who value product from early days typically favor in-house hires because of the risk associated with outsourcing. Hiring however takes time - the one resource startups never have.

Having worked with dozens of companies in a similar position we understood Seam’s needs. They wanted to move fast but also work with someone who is deeply engaged and proactive. An independent designer who can advise and guide, rather than just execute.

Project results

Our dedicated design team delivered a set of implementation-ready wireframes including redesigned, as well as new features. The new MVP design includes a new, clean and consistent visual identity that appeals to the target users. We’ve also designed and implemented a website explaining the product  to help Seam convert more inbound leads.

“From opportunity cost - I’m able to push a lot of the product stuff to you all and trust that it’s going to be magical, beautiful, you know what we’re trying to build and what we’re trying to execute on so I can go and focus my time elsewhere growing the business and making sure our customers are supported. […] I’m saving hundreds of hours and there’s very real revenue upside for us just by working with you.”
